ALABAMA CLUB SPORTS: COMPETITIVE SPIRIT
MEETS CAMPUS COMMUNITY
The University of Alabama’s club sports programs give students the chance to stay engaged in their
favorite sports while balancing academics and campus life. From hockey and lacrosse to baseball and
tennis, these clubs provide a competitive outlet without the time demands of Division I athletics. Many
students, including former high school and varsity athletes, join club sports to keep their competitive
edge, build camaraderie, and stay active.
Alabama’s club sports cater to a wide range of interests and skill levels. Some students participate for
recreational fun and community, while others compete at a national level. The UA hockey team is a prime
example of this balance, attracting passionate players who enjoy the thrill of competition in a more
flexible environment.
The hockey program, like all club sports at UA, is entirely student-run. Members handle every aspect of
the team’s operations, from recruiting and fundraising to managing travel and organizing competitions.
Securing sponsorships and raising funds is crucial to cover expenses like travel, equipment, and
tournament fees. This hands-on experience in leadership, teamwork, and organizational management is
invaluable for student-athletes.
Across campus, Alabama’s club sports do more than just keep students physically active—they foster a
sense of community, create lifelong friendships, and give students the chance to compete at a high level.
Whether students join for the love of the game or the thrill of competition, they find themselves part of a
supportive and engaged network. These clubs help keep the competitive spirit alive while offering
opportunities for personal growth and leadership development.
Alabama’s club sports program creates the perfect balance between competitive action and personal
development, providing an exciting alternative for athletes who want to continue pursuing their passion
on their own terms.
About Alabama Hockey
The Alabama Hockey Club was founded in 2005 by University of Alabama students. Alabama began play at the ACHA D3 level and was a founding member of the Southeast College Hockey Conference (SECHC) with Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt. After many successful seasons at D3, Alabama was promoted to the Division 1 level of ACHA hockey in 2015 and played its first D1 game against West Virginia on September 11, 2015. The team won 6-3 and has competed at the D1 level ever since. The program is now in its nineteenth season and plays its home games at the Pelham Civic Complex in Pelham, AL.
